CardValet helps you control your Spirit of Alaska FCU credit and debit cards. Use the app to monitor fraud activity on your account, switch your card off if it’s lost or stolen, or set spending limits.
As soon as there is purchase on your card, CardValet alerts you, using real-time transaction alerts on your phone. CardValet is also fingerprint login and face recognition compatible for ease of use.
Use the CardValet app in addition to the Spirit of Alaska Mobile App. The Mobile App provides transaction information for savings, checking and loans, while CardValet provides improved controls to manage your debit and credit cards.

Tips For When Installing CardValet
Verify your contact information on file with us
Verify Email Address and Physical Address
To verify your identity, CardValet compares the information you provide in the app to the information we have on file here at the credit union. If the information doesn’t match, the app cannot verify your identity.
Access to your email address during CardValet registration
One way that CardValet may verify your identity is through sending a code to your email address. If you have issues receiving the code email, which is rare, a Spirit of Alaska representative can help at 907-459-5900.
Temporarily disable Google Protect on Android devices
To avoid installation issues, before downloading CardValet on an Android device, temporarily turn off Google Protect in your device settings. See instructions from Google to turn off Google Protect.
Using CardValet for Business
CardValet is a great tool for controlling business spending on a credit or debit card. Spirit of Alaska offers business checking accounts.
- Specify locations where the card can be used
- Setup spending limits
- With merchant code transaction codes, specify what type of places the card can be used, such as a credit card that is limited to fuel purchases.
- Make changes quickly and on the fly using the mobile app
- Turn off the card immediately from the app to protect your business accounts from fraudulent spending or a lost card.
Using CardValet for Families
CardValet allows multiple individuals to register a checking account’s debit cards on their app. To register a card, the individual must: be connected to the checking account as a primary or joint member, download and install the app, and have access to the card information.
Because CardValet allows multiple individuals to register a card, the app can help families teach responsible spending to younger members, or create excellent budget reminders through declined transactions. This CardValet feature should be used cooperatively, as any individual with a card loaded on the app can change the limits or restrictions.
Helping Youth Spend Responsibly
Spirit of Alaska offers checking accounts with a debit for teens as young as 13. CardValet can help parents set limits for kids as they learn how to use a checking account and debit card responsibly.
- Add your child’s debit card to your CardValet app
- Specify spending limits
- Limit spending at certain places, such as entertainment venues, or to within a location’s radius.
- Increase communication with your teen on spending habits, and make changes to limits on the fly.
- Receive instant notifications when your teen spends money
- Unless you are working cooperatively with your teenager, we don’t recommend allowing the teenager access to CardValet; they will be able to change or remove any settings created by a parent if they have access to the app themselves.
Budgeting Reminders in Families
CardValet’s spending limits feature can be useful in families by declining transactions that are over the spending limit, and notifying other family members when money has been spent on a card.

I don't see all of my transactions in CardValet. Why not?
You can track some of your transactions in CardValet. The app will show the last 50 card-based transactions that have posted to your account in the last 30 days.
In short, CardValet only displays transactions conducted with the card itself.
CardValet does not show any transactions done without using the card, such as in a branch with a MSR, online transfers, ACH or Bill Pay.
Your full account history of the last 30 days will be available in our Mobile App. We recommend using both apps to manage your Spirit of Alaska accounts.
-
I'm interested in using the My Location control. How does it work?
Enable Location Tracking
For the “My Location” control, you must turn on the Location Settings and enable location tracking on your device.
Once it is enabled, the app will compare the location of your primary mobile device against the merchant’s location, as registered with the federal government.
Internet Transactions
My Location does not affect internet transactions, as it ignores transactions that are not card-present.
My Location Radius
Transactions at merchant locations that are significantly different from your location will be denied, defined as outside of a 5 mile radius of your device.
The app determines your location by assuming you always carry the phone set as your Primary Device. If you leave the phone at home, your transactions may not necessarily be denied. CardValet will also check the proximity of the merchant based on Zip code or city.
Device Turned Off
If concerned about the device being turned off with My Location rules in place, it depends on when you attempt to use the card. CardValet ignores location information more than 8 hours old.
-
Can I use My Location for my child's card?
No. My Location is only available for the enrolled cardholder. Use the Region Location feature to designate card-use areas for dependent cards.
-
Will my CardValet controls affect automatic payments on my accounts?
No, previously authorized recurrent payments continue to process and bypass the CardValet edit checks.
-
Do you have examples on how to use Merchant Controls?
CardValet uses Merchant Category Codes (MCC) for the Merchant Controls section. The codes are generally correct from store to store, but it is possible that a retailer will forward a MCC that differs from the CardValet classification.
Currently supported merchant types include:
- Department Stores (Department stores, general-purpose shopping)
- Entertainment (Movie, theater, games)
- Gas Station (Gas stations)
- Groceries (Grocery Stores, discount stores and pharmacies)
- Household (Household contractors, home improvement stores)
- Personal Care (Personal Care stores)
- Restaurants (Restaurants, fast food)
- Travel (Airlines, trains, taxicabs, hotels, railroads)
- Other (All other merchant types)
Check Merchant Code
You can check the merchant code of any particular store you frequent. Access a transaction from that store in CardValet, and look for the merchant code information provided in parenthesis.
Why to use Merchant Controls
Merchant Controls can be used for accountability or budgeting purposes. If you want to deny or limit spending at entertainment outlets, for example, you can do so using the Merchant Controls.
Families may find it useful for limiting dependent spending to gas only, or solely to eat out a restaurant.
